I am a bit surprised that you'd advocate for Valve to publish games on the Oculus store, given Facebook's initially openly and now more de facto adversarial relationship with Valve and Steam. The argument that bringing a title as big as HLA to other storefronts would give a boost to VR storefronts and the market in general is powerful.

results in a full page refresh press the space key then arrow keys to make a selection. I'll readily admit this is more an emotional, intuitive thing rather than being based purely in fact, but it does seem like there are pragmatic arguments to be made for things like consistency of experience and the idea that maintaining revenue share leads to better experiences for all, even if these arguments aren't exactly air tight. Resident Evil 4 VR, Half Life Alyx, Skyrim VR and so much more. I'm pretty ok with that being the standard personally, for example I despise Epic's exclusivity agreements, they appear transparently predatory to me, but I can understand them not putting Fortnite on Steam. It's buying exclusivity of games produced externally that's seen as problematic. It seems that the general consensus around here is that if you've produced a game yourself, it's ok to keep it exclusive to your own storefront. Sadly, there isn't really any outcry urging them to open up to other stores, when, IMO, there should be. Valve has been usually good at this practice, but with Alyx, their biggest game in years, they have stumbled. When players have the choice to play their games anywhere, they can simply choose the best ecosystem and hardware for their needs.

I'd very much like for Alyx to go to PSVR2 or an eventual Xbox Series X VR headset. Other developers, for example, also have their keys illegally sold on those sites, and by bringing customers to them, they bring eyes upon those keys.Īll games should be sold everywhere provided no technological hurdle, IMO. They are inadvertently directing unknowing customers towards shady sites. And this is why Valve not selling alyx keys on other stores is really wrong - it gives the illusion that these stores are legitimate. There are also illegitimate stores selling stolen or otherwise ill-gotten keys for Alyx at discounted prices. Now, this doesn't mean that steam is the only store selling alyx. The only legitimate store that sells alyx steam keys, is steam itself. With Half Life Alyx, they appear to have stopped doing this. Selling keys on multiple stores benefits consumers, because it allows those stores to reduce their take on each key sold to consumers to pass on savings to the customer in an attempt to drum up business. In fact, at one point, uplay from ubisoft even sold keys for valve games.

If you do own a VR headset and have played Half-Life: Alyx, why not check out some mods that expand the experience? Levitation is a 4-5 hour unofficial expansion that takes place after the base game's dramatic conclusion, while Incursion transforms Alyx into a frantic survival wave-shooter.Previous games from Valve were sold at many online retailers, like amazon or.

Planned future updates include the addition of the Half-Life Alyx HUD (the mod currently uses the Half-Life 2 HUD), hand-animations for interacting with weapons and environments, and more general balancing and bug-fixes. Remember, this isn't the mod's final version. Whether you're buzzing at the chance to finally play Alyx, or simply want to see what it looks like without VR, you can download the mod here.

Alyx is a fantastic VR game, but it's a great Valve game too, worth experiencing even in suboptimal conditions.

Great storytelling, imaginative set-pieces, highly authentic environments that flow seamlessly from one scene to next, an uncanny ability to switch from comedy to action to horror without any of it feeling out of place. Everything that makes Valve games so uniquely compelling is present in Alyx.

That said, there is more to Alyx than its VR functionality. Not only does Alyx introduce whole new ways of seeing City 17, but it also adds new methods of interacting with Valve's world. Without a doubt, VR is the optimal way to play the game. It's an impressive technical feat, but all this ignores the question of you should play Half-Life: Alyx sans VR.
